Summer learning isn't something that kids are eager to do. If you are like me, you want your kids to practice important things during the summer in hopes that they don't find their way into the black hole of summer days to only be difficult to find at the beginning of the school year.
As wonderful as that idea is, I have found it very difficult to stay on top of during the more relaxed days of summer. They kids have always smelled a book coming their way and know how to distract you from the goal before you had time to really get started. I know this all too, well.
This is why I created this fun and easy checklist for my kids to stay on top of key learning skills throughout the summer.
Here is how to create your own Summer Learning Checklist Kids would love:
- I decorated a piece of card stock with stickers that spelled out my sons names and then used my favorite laminator to keep it durable.
- I purchased clothes pins and using a permanent Sharpie, I wrote things that I would love my sons to do but we don't always get to do, or games that will practice the important skills that are often forgotten during the summer months. BE CAREFUL to pay attention to evenly place clothes pins on both sides. I put them in place, PRIOR to writing the activities on them, to be sure I wrote them the write way and had balance for the finished product.
- After I wrote the activities on the front, I would then turn them over and wrote “COMPLETED” on the back, so when they are done with one of the activities, they could check it off by just turning the clothes pin around.
- I punched holes in each corner at the top and purchased some ribbon to put through the holes and knotted.
- I hung this on large thumb nails in a place where they can chose their own activities and work on their weekly checklist.
Here is the Summer Learning Checklist for my almost 11 year old son: (suggestion of 30 minutes minimum)
- Geosafari
- Math Safari
- Read
- Make a movie
- Build something
- Explore something
- Watch an Education movie
- Play something that your siblings want to play
