Laundry. It is everywhere, and never ending! Moms can hardly get on top of the loads, without turning around to only find a pile already growing.
I have had the same laundry system for years and it worked perfectly for a long time. Recently, with my crazy schedule and to-do list, I was frustrated that I was having to touch my husband's and my clothes twice before getting them where they belonged.
You can always find a ‘good thing' in what seems to be a bad day and I did! I was getting behind on our laundry and by the time I got to doing it, I had a full load of laundry for just my husband and myself. I decided to break the system and bring my hangers to the laundry room and hang them up immediately, instead of folding them and then hanging them up later.
Immediately, I called my family to the laundry room, including my husband. I informed them that starting immediately, we were doing laundry differently. I expected some issues since this has been our system for years, like 15 years and old habits are hard to break. That wasn't the case! Everyone was thrilled to see the old system disappear and the new one to take its place and it has been AMAZING! WONDERFUL! JOYFUL! You get the point, right?
The Laundry System I Wish I Started Earlier
First thing I did was told my younger children that they now had their own bin in our triple laundry sorter, leaving one sorter for our towels.
Next, I told my two older children that they can get a bin from the attic and keep their own dirty clothes in their closet.
Then, I turned to my husband and said, “This laundry basket is for our dirty clothes and will be in our closet.”
Lastly, I told my whole family that they are responsible for their own laundry, I will continue to do my husbands and mine, along with my four year olds, but his training has begun already. I expected to hear complaints, but each one of my family members were thrilled to be in charge of their own clothes and when they got done. Maybe that had a lot to do with how behind I had gotten, but after several weeks of this new system, we are all happy!
To make it even easier, we each decided what day of the week was our laundry day and the results have been amazing! No more piles of clothes waiting to be taken care of at the end of the week and everyone is happy!
If you are worried about mixing colors, you could try using OxiClean or Clorox2, which is safe for colors. I would recommend washing reds and denim separately for a while to be sure they don't bleed their colors.
